The Hardball Briefing On MSNBC
------------------------------------------------------
At 5:30 p.m. Eastern tonight, you must watch a 30-minute Hardball Special
Report on the Cheney shooting accident. Chris will talk with Sen. Joe Biden
(D-DE) about how Cheney and the White House have handled the situation as well
as what questions still linger over Cheney's accountability to the president,
the press, and the people. Chris also will talk with Anne Kornblut of the New
York Times and Jim VandeHei of the Washington Post about the latest news in the
matter. New York Times Columnist Bob Herbert will say why he thinks the vice
president dislikes the spotlight. In case you hadn't heard, the AP reports the
sheriff's office has wrapped up its investigation of the shooting:

Then, at 7 p.m. Eastern, it's a full hour of Hardball with more from Biden,
ranking Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, who will tell Chris
what questions he thinks need to be answered about the once-secret NSA
surveillance program. (He'll have more thoughts on the Cheney incident as
well.) Late this afternoon, Senate Select Intelligence Committee Chairman Pat
Roberts (R-KS) announced that he has reached a deal with the White House about
how to change the FISA laws. Here's more on that from the AP:

NBC News' Senior Investigative Correspondent Lisa Myers will join Chris to
explain how, why, and when the vice president obtained the authority to
declassify certain national security information, as he stated Wednesday in his
conversation with Fox News' Brit Hume. Read about it in today's AP report:

Plus, Hardball Political Anaylst and National Review Washington Editor Kate
O'Beirne and Washington Post Columnist David Ignatius will be here to share
their own thoughts and their reactions to everyone else's take on the accident,
from the vice president to the press. Hardblogger All-Star Craig Crawford, an
MSNBC political analyst and Congressional Quarterly columnist, and the
Washington Post's Dana Milbank also will join Chris to talk about how this
story was reported...and how the administration has treated the press in the
meantime. Check out the latest from Crawford and Milbank here:
