The Hardball Briefing On MSNBC
------------------------------------------------------
It seems there's a lot of waiting in Washington this week. Waiting for Special
Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald's next move in the CIA leak probe. Waiting for
Gen. Michael Hayden's confirmation hearing as CIA boss tomorrow (and the
expected fireworks there). Waiting to see if AT&T joins Verizon and BellSouth
in knocking down USA TODAY's report on a government phone call database.
Waiting to find out if New Orleans voters this Saturday will give Mayor Ray
Nagin another four years to lead their recovery. Waiting to see if the
president's polls get worse or better.
Tonight on Hardball, you won't have to wait long for action in Chris'
conversation with Tom Ridge, the former Pennsylvania governor and the country's
first homeland security secretary. Ridge will play Hardball with Chris about
the state of security and his own Republican party.
Plus, Rep. John Murtha (D-PA), who six months ago called for action to redeploy
U.S. troops from Iraq, said today that a Pentagon investigation into the death
of Iraqi civilians last November in Haditha will show that U.S. Marines "killed
innocent civilians in cold blood" there because of pressures on them. Murtha
joins Chris tonight to talk more about that and the current situation in Iraq.
Jay Carney, Washington bureau chief for Time, and Chuck Todd, editor-in-chief
of The Hotline, will talk with Chris about the looming politics of the CIA leak
probe and the new bad news for Republicans in the polls. The Washington Post
has more on poll doldrums:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/05/16/AR2006051601264.html.
Hardball Correspondent David Shuster will have more on the new poll showing
America's confidence in the Republican Congress at a new low, as well as the
latest on the CIA leak case.
Author Shelby Steele will be here to talk about race relations in America. His
new book is called "White Guilt: How Blacks and Whites Together Destroyed the
Promise of the Civil Rights Era." Read a profile of Steele in Monday's San
Francisco Chronicle:

Plus, it's only one day until Hardball's exclusive look on Thursday inside the
New York City headquarters of Opus Dei. Tonight, you'll get a special sneak
preview of Thursday's exclusive report. Is the group at the center "The Da
Vinci Code" really so ominous? Chris goes inside to talk to the group's
leaders. Newsweek's Jon Meacham, Variety's Peter Bart, and Mandalay Pictures
President Peter Guber (live from Cannes!) will join Chris to talk about the
fact and fiction in the widely anticipated film. Check out an exclusive (sneak)
sneak preview on MSNBC.com: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12835939/.
