            The Hardball Briefing On MSNBC
------------------------------------------------------

The cease-fire deal between Israel and Hezbollah took effect early this morning
and appears to be holding through the first day. Here's the latest on
MSNBC.com: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/14326294/.

Tonight on Hardball, Chris will have the latest on the halt to hostilities with
NBC's Richard Engel in Tyre, Lebanon. Seymour Hersh, investigative reporter for
the New Yorker, will join Chris to talk about his article (that has everyone
talking) about U.S. involvement in planning Israel's offensive against
Hezbollah. Read it here:
http://www.newyorker.com/fact/content/articles/060821fa_fact.

Back from his ranch, President Bush had meetings today at the Pentagon and
State Department to talk about the Middle East situation. The AP reports on a
blast today that killed at least 47 in Baghdad and has Iraqi and U.S. officials
arguing over the cause: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/14343108/.

Also tonight, Hardball's David Shuster will report on the hot focus on national
security as we're just 85 days until the midterm election. MSNBC Political
Analyst Pat Buchanan and Hardball Political Analyst Bob Shrum will debate how
that security fight could determine control of Congress.

Plus, in today's Washington Post, reporter Jim VandeHei focuses on potential
problems for Republicans in the Northeast. It's a must-read:
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/14336006/. Hardballers (and Northeasterners!)
Michael Smerconish of WPHT radio in Philadelphia and MSNBC analyst Mike
Barnicle of WTKK radio in Boston will dig into what's driving the politics of
the upper I-95 corridor.
