The Hardball Briefing On MSNBC
------------------------------------------------------
After stops at the Pentagon and State Department on Monday, President Bush
continued his security tour today with meetings at the National
Counterterrorism Center in Virginia. In brief remarks, the president said that
"America is safer than it has been. But it's not yet safe." Here's his full
statement: http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2006/08/20060815.html.
Tonight on Hardball, Chris will talk with Mark Green, author of "Losing Our
Democracy" and candidate for attorney general in New York, and
OpinionJournal.com's John Fund about the debate over national security.
Hardball's David Shuster will report on how both parties are ramping up the
rhetoric to sway voters their way. The New York Times took a big look at how
the fight over national security might be different in 2006 than it was in the
past couple of elections. Check it out:

Plus, it's Primary Day in Nevada today. Chris will talk with the Democratic
candidate for the U.S. Senate: Jack Carter, son of former President Jimmy
Carter. Polls show Carter trailing Sen. John Ensign (R-NV) and Chris will ask
him how he thinks he can close the gap in the last 84 days before the midterm.
Here's more on the Nevada vote in the Las Vegas Review-Journal:

Hardballers Chris Cillizza, author of "The Fix" on WashingtonPost.com, and Jeff
Zeleny of the Chicago Tribune, will join Chris to talk about how war politics
are playing out across the country -- from Sen. Joe Lieberman (D-CT)'s
independent fight in Connecticut to Rep. Harold Ford Jr. (D-TN)'s U.S. Senate
bid in Tennessee and more! Cillizza reported today on some verbal wars
surrounding Sen. George Allen (R-VA): http://blog.washingtonpost.com/thefix/.
Finally, congratulations to Hardball's David Shuster for receiving the "Bugle
Award" from the Disabled American Veterans for his five-part series called "For
the Brave." Shuster's reports featured veterans from World War II to the Iraq
War facing physical challenges and dealing with emotional scars of war. Team
Hardball is very proud of him for a recognition that is well-deserved!
