            The Hardball Briefing On MSNBC
------------------------------------------------------
Less than a week before he delivers the State of the Union, can President Bush
bring his party back together on Iraq? Wednesday night, GOP leaders met behind
closed-doors in an effort to find common ground on Bush's troop surge, but
today the party is still split. Sen. Olympia Snowe (R-ME) is the latest
Republican to join with Democrats co-sponsoring a bipartisan resolution
opposing Bush's war plan. She'll join us tonight on Hardball with Sen. Mary
Landrieu (D-LA) to talk about what they think needs to happen in Iraq. But
first, '08 contender Sen. Joe Biden (D-DE), chairman of the Senate Foreign
Relations Committee, will be here to tell Chris about the resolution, which his
committee will start debating on January 24.

Go to www.politics.msnbc.com for the latest on Bush, Iraq and all of today's
political news.

It's day three of the Scooter Libby trial. We'll get an update on what's
happening from Hardball Correspondent David Shuster at the federal courthouse.
Read Shuster's latest posts at www.hardblogger.msnbc.com. Then, the
Hardballers, Kate O'Beirne of the National Review and Lisa Caputo, former White
House press secretary for then-First Lady Hillary Clinton, on how the race for
'08 is shaping up and the Bush plan vs. Congress.

And Richard Clarke, the former National Security Council terrorism advisor who
said the Bush Administration ignored Al Qaeda threats in the months leading up
to the 9-11 attacks, will be here. He's the author of a new book called
"Breakpoint." We'll ask him about the CIA leak case and get his thoughts on
the president's latest strategy for Iraq.
