The Hardball Briefing On MSNBC
------------------------------------------------------
Attorney General Alberto Gonzales responded to his department's firing of eight
U.S. attorneys by saying mistakes were made. As the investigation into what
happened intensifies, will more than eight be left without jobs? Plus, former
CIA operative Valerie Plame Wilson will testify Friday on Capitol Hill, now
Democrats in Congress are calling for White House officials to do the same.
Meanwhile, the Congressional debate over Iraq continues. And there's no
shortage of news in the race for '08. Today, Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY) drew
attention when she brought back warnings of a "vast, right-wing conspiracy."
We'll have the latest on all that tonight on Hardball.
Up first, was an actual crime committed when a group of U.S. attorneys serving
at the president's pleasure were let go for alleged poor job performance?
Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) is one of the voices calling for Attorney General
Alberto Gonzales to resign. Tonight, Schumer plays Hardball. Then, how will
the president handle this latest scandal? We'll hear from Dan Bartlett,
Counselor to the president.
MSNBC Political Analyst Pat Buchanan and Richard Ben Veniste, former chief of
the Watergate task force, will be here to talk about the politics of it all,
including what the investigation means for the future of the Bush
administration and Gonzalez. And later in the show, we'll have more on this,
Iraq and all the day's big news with Newsweek's Howard Fineman, Mike Allen from
Politico.com and the Washington Post's Anne Kornblut.
Then, we'll switch gears to Iraq with presidential candidate Rep. Duncan Hunter
(R-CA), a ranking member of the Armed Services Committee, just back from Iraq.
Tonight, he'll talk about the continuing debate in Congress over the war, if
the Bush plan is working on the ground and what he thinks about the revelations
of poor care for wounded troops here at home.
