The Hardball Briefing On MSNBC
------------------------------------------------------
The new war on Hilary: facing a tough Republican opposition effort, is it
possible for Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY) to win the likeability contest with
voters? Plus, Colin Powell: jumping ship? The former secretary of state has
given foreign policy advice to Sen. Barack Obama. Is full support next? And
bada bing! TV's "The Sopranos" comes to an end. Chris tells us what he thinks
about Tony Soprano's goodbye. That's all tonight on Hardball.
Up first, Hillary Clinton is running ahead of the Democratic pack, but overall
she's polling negative with half the country. Can her party win the White
House with Clinton as the nominee? And Powell problems? In addition to his
Obama counsel, Sunday on NBC's "Meet the Press," Powell also said he thinks the
U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay should be shut down immediately. Will
his latest moves hurt the already ailing Bush administration. NBC's Andrea
Mitchell and former presidential advisor David Gergen tackle the latest in '08
politics.
Then, where do the president's loyalties fall? As Attorney General Alberto
Gonzales continues to enjoy Bush's backing, the president remains quiet on
former aid Scooter Libby, who's slated to begin his sentence if he isn't issued
bail pending appeal this Thursday. Will the president save his man? David
Frum, former Bush 43 speechwriter and Democratic consultant Jenny Backus join
us for tonight's Hardball Debate.
And our Hardball Panel: Linda Douglass from the National Journal and NBC News
political director Chuck Todd will be here with more on Powell, Clinton and all
the day's political news.
