            The Hardball Briefing On MSNBC
------------------------------------------------------

Tonight - Hardball is live from the debate site at the University of
Mississippi!

Sen. John McCain will join Sen. Barack Obama at 9pm ET for the first
presidential debate of the season. It's history in the making - Ole Miss is
site of James Meredith's effort to become the first African American student
here in 1962. Now, forty-six years later, the first African American
presidential candidate, Sen. Obama, will take the stage with Sen. McCain.
You'll be watching history and MSNBC will be here all night covering it.

First up on the 5pm Hardball - we'll start with the latest on the bailout in
Washington with Rep. Rahm Emanuel (R-IL) and Rep. Heather Wilson (R-NM).

Then, Newsweek's Howard Fineman and NBC News Political Director Chuck Todd will
be on hand to preview the debate. What does each candidate need to do? Who will
win the spin war? They'll break it down for you.

Plus, find out what historic lessons today's candidates can take away from the
Great 1960 debate between John Kennedy and Richard Nixon. We'll get the scoop
from Presidential Historian Doug Brinkley.

MSNBC Chief Washington Correspondent Norah O'Donnell will also join us with the
latest NBC poll numbers. We'll also talk to Democratic Party chair Howard Dean
and Fmr. Sen. Trent Lott (R-MS) about the state of the '08 race.

Then during the Politics Fix, we'll look at this week's political rollercoaster
and see which candidate gained the most and which will struggle to play
catch-up as the election nears.

Coming up on a special 7pm version of Hardball - is the burden on John McCain
tonight? Which candidate will look more presidential in handling this bailout
crisis? And Palin's had a tough week. Is she in trouble? Will the Palin pick
ultimately payoff for McCain?

The debate starts at 9 p.m. and will be followed by specials from David
Gregory, Keith Olbermann, Chis Matthews, and Rachel Maddow. Stay tuned all
night for MSNBC's coverage of the 2008 presidential debate. It's only on MSNBC
- the place for politics!
