It's a HL7 standard for maintaining patient and user context on the clinician's desktop. Basically if you have CPRS open and pick John Doe. Then fire up iMedConsent(tm), our software will have John Doe already up. No confusion among names, SSNs, DOBs, etc. The key is uniform patient selection and context. If you change the patient in CPRS, iMedConsent(tm) is notified of the patient change and automatically updates. If you have a document up in our system (created for John Doe) and then change patients, our system will challenge CCOW. With a challenge, a user can either accept the patient change (destroy the document since it was for John and not Jane) OR disregard the change and stay on John (we would leave the document up). The applications can now communicate with other, on the local system, about the patient and user. The VA isn't currently using SSO technology but it is part of the Sentillion solution and it's going to be used someday. Using Sentillion and CCOW, User context can also be shared on the local system to enable SSO. [Auto-Login is SSO but many sites don't (or can't) use it, this will supplement it].
