Hey guys, play nice! The problem here is not "my OS is better than
yours!" Applications like OpenOffice or Firefox install and run
indistinguishably on multiple platforms. The problem is that, before
you can run it, VistA needs to be extensively configured at the MUMPS
level, and the configuration methods differ on different MUMPS'. Once
it's configured and you login to VistA you can't tell the difference in
platform. When the VA switched from VMS to Cache, all we saw as users
was an increase in response time.
What VistA needs is a prepackaged configuration with a platform specific
installation script which installs on the users desired OS/MUMPS
combination. What we have now are the FOIA releases filled with old
configuration data and VOE configured for one platform. What "someone"
(and I understand that the last developers meeting did have some work in
this direction) needs to do is to create a "clean", standard starting
configuration which can be installed (via a platform specific script) on
GT.M/Linux/VMS/Alpha/(Windows?, Cache/Windows/Linux/(?OS X) or any other
flavor of MUMPS. "Type SETUP to begin".

I'll agree that there is more GTM traffic here, but there is certainly
bandwidth for both. It seems the the newbie questions recently have
been regarding Cache', and I think that their answers have been promptly
answered (by Nancy).
So I agree that it is a bit unfair to say that this list is lopsided
just because there are not as many questions posted for a particular
OS/environment.
