Questions like this always provoke controversy. After all, you might
ask, what right does this Greg Woodhouse guy have to say that such and
such a programming practice is a bad idea? What IS a bad idea? We all
have our own ways of developing programs and things we feel strongly
about, and this is one of mine. I can point out some of the
consequences of a design choice and add that I think they provide a
convincing case that the practice should not be used. Someone else can
come along and argue that the benefits of a design strategy are enough
to outweigh the cost. That's where prescriptive statements, such as the
one I make above, are bound to remain controversial, But, I hope that
what I have said of a descriptive nature regarding the consequences of
this design choice will not be judged to be similarly controversial.

Greg, Please do not be concerned about provoking controversy because of my questions. In most cases we can learn from each other's opinions. I am old man who learned programming by the seat of my pants and I am still learning. This forum is one of the few places that I learn things that I can apply to what I actually do and to what I already know about. I can also ask questions here. That is something I cannot do when I try to read books.
