Incorrect.
The latest and greatest WEGA XBR 960 34" is still a 1080i tube. It will only display 480i, 480p, and 1080i natively. 720p is still upconverted.
Also, Sony's measured vertical lines of resolution are only 1400 vs 1920 required to be true 1080i - then again, most CRT's are like this. Only 9" CRT guns" have >1900 measured lines of resolution.
Fixed pixel display devices do not have this issue. The new 1080p capable DLP, plasma, and LCD sets will have 1:1 pixel measurements with advertised display capability vs measured lines.

Yes, the digital sets right now only support one or the other. A few of the HDTV CRTs (like your generation Wega support both). The first gen Wega I have only supports 1080i and 480p.
