Nevermind guys, panic averted
Turns out it was Daemontools,
deleted d346bus.sys and d346prt.sys
did a repair installation of windows
problem solved.
except for the fundamental problem of windows being crap, but I guess
I'm just going to have to grin and bear that.

the data on the disk is intact, but that windows install has
utterly borked itself to FUBAR status, is there an easy/semi-easy
way to transfer the profiles across to another install (which I've
done and works) on the same disk
yes yes, I know, take backups...
