Wiping all temporary directories seldom removes all virus

I just had a client's wife call me wanting to know if I'd buy back a 3yr old machine. It seems that hubby can't stay away from prOn sites & will not pay the subscription fee for AV updates so the machine is constantly fubarred. They've already spent twice as much as the machine cost initially having me wipe & reload Xp many times. In his case dumping the TIF [temporary internet files] does alleviate about half of the bugs but no where near all of them. They live out in the boonies so their only internet connection is via dialup. YUCK ! I suppose they could've bought an SMC router that also does dialup if they even still make them. FWIW I told her that unless she wanted to donate it that it wasn't worth my time. Heck it was a minimal machine 3yrs ago so I know there isn't much that could be salvaged so I told her to donate it to charity & take a tax write off. I actually feel better because that guy shouldn't be spending so much time away from his family playing with himself.

If people are behind a router & they aren't shooting themselves in the foot by launching attachments that they shouldn't then clearing the TIFs is of very little benefit. As Chris said it saves time on virus scans or even searches if it is cleared out but if I were on dialup I surely wouldn't want to wait that extra time waiting for graphics to load because they weren't in the cache.
