The OS can typically revert a drive down to PIO mode if it detects driver errors, including CRC. But, other tricks that can trigger it include having zips/isos/imgs that were mastered with CRC errors when in fact the drive housing them is perfectly fine.

Do not test the SMART Gods, you should bow to them for giving you a warning.

YMMV.

As far as the CRC goes, I would first make sure your OS did not dumb down
the IDE drive to PIO mode.
