Not sure if your looking for something like this but XBMC (http://xbmc.org/) seems to be the best software on the market from what I hear and its open source and free and cross platform. Rare that a open source project is the best but it seems like it is. Boxee.tv is completely based on XBMC source and they are getting a lot of attention lately.
