I wouldn't say that. The best HD display available is still the
Pioneer Elites, all be it they are very expensive. Plasma still has
the best color, and black levels and I think you would be hard
pressed to find an expert who doesn't think so. For high end 60 inch
and above I still think they have a place. They just need to get the
power requirement down..... and the price.
this is a interesting article from last June

LCD-Plasma Display Technology Shoot-Out
If you were shopping for a large-screen HDTV just a few years ago you
would have seen mostly Rear Projection HDTVs, based primarily on DLP,
LCD and LCoS technologies, plus a fair number of pricey direct-view
Plasmas, and maybe a few very expensive direct-view LCDs. It's
amazing how the TV industry has abruptly toggled into an entirely
different lineup. Now you'll see mostly direct-view LCDs together
with a small number of Plasmas. If you look in some back corner you
may find a few attractively priced Rear Projection DLP HDTVs. CRT and
LCoS technologies are now dead for HDTVs, and Rear Projection is "a
dead man walking."
Scientifically, it's hard to understand why this happened because
CRT, LCoS and DLP offered the highest picture quality at the lowest
price, while direct-view large-screen LCDs have historically offered
the lowest picture quality at the highest price. This seems to be the
result of a series of consumer misconceptions together with some high
powered industry marketing. Of course, all of the display
technologies have improved dramatically over the last few years, so
we decided to revisit this topic and do a new in-depth Shoot-Out
comparison and analysis of LCD and Plasma technologies to find out
how they are currently performing.
. From there is a minefield of features, caveats, and good/bad
models for the big name's like Vizio, Samsung, Sony.
It's hard to get proper testing done in-store since they will have a
crap video source driving all sets and limited to no bluray players
connected. If you get a proper bluray DVD with test material & can
get them to attach a player to a few sets you might be able to get
an idea of what's good.
Personally I like buy, try, return as my method for selecting TV's, YMMV.

A new plasma or LCD (using LEDs as the light source) TV is probably your
best bet. They'll all be 1080p, and you should definitely have that as
Blu-Ray needs that res, and the tv should also upconvert SD stuff to that
res too...and nothing beats watching tv in HD nowadays; it's a world of
difference since I got my TivoHD last Oct and started recording everything
in HD; I'd never go back!
Depends on how much you want to spend though. Fwiw, I got a 60" Samsung DLP
(which used LED though) on sale at Best Buy for $950 (talked it down from
the $1200; it was open box) back in Feb or so when my 36" Sony XBR WEGA CRT
died, and I've been pretty happy with it.
If any of those are still around (I doubt they're making them anymore in
favor of LCD since everyone wants "thin") it could be a good price/perf
ratio, as a LCD or Plasma that size is going to be WAAAY more expensive...if
you do find one and have questions I can fill you in on whether it's a good
one or not, etc.
That's the high-level w/o getting too detailed. HTH!

Subject: [H] advise
Moving into a new place and it looks like I will move off the bottom feeder
list (for TV's)
Going to replace my 32" crt with probably a 46" flat screen and get a new
audio system also with a blue ray player.
I know crap about all this 1080p and the rest of the specs. LCD,LED ????
Did not figure would go there until this TV crapped out but my current stand
and TV will go to my son's new room and apparently we/I am able to get
whatever I need.(want) 8-)
Advice appreciated without starting a audio /video war. <:-|
thanks
