Yes, a good SSD is many times better than even a VR. The Intel G2's are the best, but anything based on the Indilinx Barefoot controller (ie: OCZ Vertex) is also good. The 80GB Intel G2 should run around $230, but the prices are jacked up and it's OOS in many stores due to very high demand. I'm avoiding Newegg on this drive--they bumped the price all the way up to $499 on it to screw over customers. Newegg is one of the very worst about pricing on hot new items.
Avoid anything based on Samsung or especially JMicron controllers. You're better off with a VR than a JMicron-based SSD IMO.
