The machine name it has (SERVER1) is the same as the physical machine

should work in this goofy circumstance in win2k, but I can't find anyone
who has tried such a feat..
I never tried copying the NTDS folder, but you could always make a copy of
the VM and give it a try.
I think the best solution is to (if possible) remove active directory from
the virtual machine, connect to the domain as a member server, install
active directory as another domain controller, let it sync, then move the
FSMO roles over and eventually demote the old server.
