Collective,
OK. Let me ask another question. I purchased, opened the package, and,
installed Windows 8.1 (64bit).
It seems to run very stable, if still very confusing to me atm. I will
get over this, thank you.
Yes, I did also "activate" this install; so I believe that M$ now knows
that one of my PCs is now using W8.1.
Fine. I also know that I can not re-use my DVDs again EXCEPT to re-load
the same OS to the PC it lives on
now. I believe I am now part of some large 'Activated' database at M$. Fine.
I am licensed to use the M$ code from the DVDs and any follow on support
services. I own the DVDs and the
package only.
Does M$ have a 'De-Activation process' should I decide to install this
W8.1 code on a different PC that I own?
No, I have no plan to sell my W8.1 (full version 32/64) to anyone else.
Thank you for any comments/suggestions you choose to share.

Winterlight,
good thought. I may do that. Do you have a direct phone number? I do not.
Never been in this bind before................
Again, I have zero problem doing another format followed by an install
of Win 8.1 PRO.
I care little for the 'activation' of Win8.1 (plain) that M$ graced me
with.
Yes, I will be grumpy if M$ never allows me to use my 02/27/14 DVD's
ever againon a
different PC. Let's just say that I sorta understand M$'s control.
But, I am still confused.
If my initial use of the wrong OS sw permanently kills any further use
of the DVD's code,
then I am now deeply disappointed with M$.

Duncan

why don't you contact MS and ask them? You can verify your key with
them... You can activate with them... you can buy the key from them.

Tim,
Please re-read below, it does NOT work. M$ says I can not use that
key(the 8.1 PRO key) to activate.
I'll hold and wait for other opinions/suggestions.
Thanks,

If you have the pro version key you can just enter it in.

Tim,
I will look at your link. But, if there is any $$$ involved I am not
really interested.
BTW, I just tried your suggestion to update the product key from
the System
page. This FAILED with the msg:
"This key can't be used to activate this edition of Windows.
Please try
another."
The key I used was packed with my new Windows 8.1 PRO sw. DOH!
Am I allowed to De-Activate a previous install of Windows 8.1 and
still
retain
ownership or re-activation of the 'old' 8.1 OS sw at a later date?
Otherwise, I will drop the 'old 8.1' OS DVD's in my shredder and
just move
on
into the future. M$ truly has this 'activation' business truly locked
down. I don't
mind. I just to get to where I choose to be.
As I wrote, I don't have trouble doing a format of the SSD again and
starting all over.
I sorta expected this hoop-jumping
anyway............................. :)

Duncan,
Give this a try:

You can upgrade on the fly. It's like Windows 7's Anytime Upgrade.

Tim,
OK, but I'll wait for other impressions. Ultimately, I figure I can
just format the SSD and start from scratch. No real data to
worry about
atm!

Tim,
Thank you for the share! Yes, I have seen this view. OK. Now,
I get
my confusion. I have loaded/activated plain old Win8.1-64bit.
The large blue font in the upper-right must refer to the
'Windows 8'
series (Win8.0-Win 8.9). At least that is how I read this.
Two days ago the postman delivered my replacement OS box.
It is labeled Windows 8.1 PRO (full version).
So, now the question is: Can I use the 64-bit DVD to 'upgrade' to
Win8.1 PRO, or, should I just hope that the DVD asks to format
the
SSD
(C:\) and just start over again fresh. I will only loose my FF
browser and my Eset AV install (fully backed up to NAS!
Thanks again,
Duncan
