Randomly de-lurking for my annual "my $.02" post! ;) Depending on the cost there are also brand agnostic ADP insurance plans from the likes of Safeware, Worth Ave Group, etc...
After all these years I still do not agree with Thane about Acer being a quality brand and it's certainly not one I hear bantered about in laptop shootouts as a great brand. I'd recommend HP personally but when you're talking $500~600 market I'm quick to say "save your money a few more months" or consider non-windows tablet alternatives where that kind of low end hardware maters not. By low-end I refer to what was once AMD dominance in that price band (I'm long time anti-AMD in the mobile market) now seems to be ATOM+Intel HD. Another budget option is the rich Android & to lesser degree (IMHO) chrome markets $400 & under which more than hold their own until you talk need for actual windows binaries or games. That is to say you can do all your "school work" from note taking to ebooks to email/web to even powerpoint on them.
