Thanks.  Could be on to something there.  I will pursue looking at testing the 
drive.

The locking up can happen whether it is recording or not.  I was trying to 
demonstrate that I did not think processes were executing while it appeared 
locked up.

Strangely enough my bad drive passed chkdsk multiple times without one fail, so 
pulling it was a last ditch effect since I'd already swapped video card, RAM 
and power supply.
