At this point I'm afraid I really do have to ask, why must you remain on a 
nearly 11 year old OS that has been completely unsupported since the 13th of 
July ? Isn't that a potential security nightmare for a start?

Pretty much no modern hardware in, well, most/any category will have Windows 
2000 support, so it's down to the pure luck of the XP driver working without 
issues.

to answer question 2:
Uninstalling the disk controller in device manager before final power down on 
the old board MIGHT successfully allow you to successfully boot on a mainboard 
with a totally different chipset, so that is at least plausible.
