there are a number of reasons behind this:

1.  none of the manufacturer's will guarantee which drive will be in the
case model wise or spec wise beyond the size.  go ahead, try email them and
ask.  they will not tell you, I've tried.

2. build quality of most premade external cases are junk.

I just assembled an external for my father using the vantec CX super speed
and a WD20EARS green. it's usb 3.0 & only cost me ~$110 dollars.  if you
want esata & usb 2.0 instead there is a similar vantec case for a little
less.
