I have to admit, I find a lot of the comments here... amusing. Let's go
back a couple of years... back when this was the Toms OC list (only a few of
us I think remember those days) around 1995ish.

Why would you overclock a computer? 50Mhz is PLENTY of speed. These
guys/gals are talking nonsense and breaking expensive computers!
E-mail was just starting to really get in it's stride in the work place.
All the old geezers said that it was killing the paper letter.
All business ethic was going out the window, people were just putting down
their thoughts and sending it without so much as a header!
Cellphones were starting to come out and be affordable to the public. Why
would anyone need to talk while they were moving though?!?! You'll kill
conversation and distract people!

/rant

Things change over time, some people change with them, some people don't,
and yet still others are born in to them. Young people adopt new technology
because they are flexible and see benefits, not negatives. I have a FB
account, mostly just in case I need to get in touch with someone. I only
log in to it when I need to contact someone on it. I don't remember the
last time I sat on it for more than 5 minutes. For years, people sat around
the water cooler, reading club (you don't think they just read books do
you!), the rotary club and talked crap about other people. Technology has
changed the speed and place at which this happens, that is all. I agree
that people put WAAAY too much information out there, but they are doing it
knowing that anyone could read that if they are not careful. I don't blame
Zuckerburg at all, I blame the parents and people for not either teaching
their kids about privacy or not reading up before taking the plunge on
something new. For years people would research things before doing them,
now they don't even think about things like that, they just sign up! When
was the last time you read a EULA?

The proliferation of texting is very easy to explain: It removes the human
element from the conversation, so people are more apt to say something they
would not eye to eye. It is easier since you can delay responses, giving
one to think before speaking (because every thing in this world moves so
quickly). You can easily text someone in a crowded bar (or while at the
dinner table), when you can't place a call. Do I think that the quality of
the written English language has gone down hill? Certainly. I can't tell
you how many times I have received absolute drivel from a co-worker when
asked to do a write up. Funny thing though: I'd say it's about equal from
older people, as from youngsters.

What I do fear is how the human element is being taken away from
conversations, but that is just something that is going to happen.
Encourage people to sit at a dinner table without a TV, invite friends over
for dinner, just listen to music with someone. Remove the technology every
once in awhile and I think the human race will be fine, but never stop
adapting. If you don't eventually you'll end up one of the people that you
laughed at years ago.

P.S. For the record, I'm 35, so no spring chicken ;)
