Unless it's an X25-E, I'm guessing the drive is actually 80GB.
You're right Greg, it is a G3 80... I also have a couple of OCZ Vertex 32GB SSD srunning as software RAID0 which is where I got the 64. I use that to install games on.. they load fast. And I am sure you are right about the rest but my setup is working fine for me. I mostly video edit from a 6GB RAM drive .. which I think works a hell of a lot better then any SSD.
So anyway, I think it's a perfect example of two different people with very different aspects of the problem that they're addressing. I'm looking at long-term life. Microsoft's looking at performance.
Brian, my G3 is going on three years, and hasn't given me a bit of trouble... actually, neither has the OCZs and they are even older. If they die now so what... I will go get a newer better one. Not using your SSD drive for a swap file because your worried about it burning out is a bit like not watching your Plasma TV because you don't want it to start dimming. By the time any of that starts happening I am going to want a new one.
Even if you don't need the additional capacity, 64GB drives don't populate all of a modern controller's channels, meaning that they perform worse than their larger brothers. Larger drives are also better for endurance, as they have more NAND to wear level across. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Winterlight Sent: Thursday, March 01, 2012 6:21 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [H] Hard drive weirdness and Shopping for an SSD I am using an Intel 64GB SSD with Win7Pro and I have more then enough space. I have been running my SSD for a couple of years and I am at 52 GB but that is with a 16GB swap. I should reduce the swap, I have 16GB of RAM which is why windows makes it that big. But I still have plenty of space. I suppose if you were installing lots of 5GB games you would need more space. I keep all my data in on a Raptor and my Media on other large drives. I don't see any reason to put downloads or drivers on a SSD when you are rarely going to use them. I use encrypted drives for my Data and at first I had them on the SSD but frankly, now that they are on the Raptor, I don't notice any difference, and it makes my weekly imaging a lot easier to manage.
