The only benefit is being able to run programs written in the .NET application development language. Nothing more. It's similar to having Java installed--it doesn't add or do anything other than being able to run Java applications (including web applets). Think of it as the modern language equivalent of the old Visual Basic or Visual C++ runtimes. (VBRUN500.dll, anyone?)
