Yes, WDC acquired Hitachi's storage division. However, several regulatory 
agencies (including the FTC in the US) made divestment of certain factories and 
technologies related to 3.5" disk manufacturing to Toshiba a requirement for 
their approval.

I soured considerably on WDC after they started crippling their desktop class 
drives by disabling TLER - a branded form of the ATA standard ERC - making them 
unsuitable for RAID. Hitachi drives have been, by far, the most cooperative in 
RAID, so WDC being forced to divest these assets to a third party is extremely 
welcome.

Umm...  Did Hitachi storage get bought by WDC? Fujitsu was bought out by 
Toshiba and Samsung was bought out by Seagate.
