When I was in the market for a NAS a couple of years ago, I researched for
at least 2 months before taking the plunge. I got a DS1511+ and upgraded
the internal memory to 3Gb Myself (by adding a 2GB SODIMM).

Anyway, long story short, it's the best investment I've made. At my home I
have 3 networked players. One in the kids room, one in the living room and
one in our bedroom. I also have several Airport Expresses for streaming
music in the living room and bedroom.

I can stream 1080 HD content to all devices, stream music to all the
airports and the NAS does torrent downloads and I can copy files to it via
the network as well as copying files to/from the USB to an external HDD
without breaking a sweat.

Amazing performance, amazing reliability. I am using the SHR (Synology
Hybrid RAID) FS and I have mixed and matched HDD sizes as well as
manufacturers. Everything just works!! The initial volume creation took
24 hours though :) The web gui is nothing short of amazing.

Get the DS1512. You will not be disappointed.

The great thing is that if you do ever need extra space, you can get an
enclosure from Synology and daisy chain them and get 5 more drive bays. I
doubt I'll ever be needing that for the present moment. I have all 5 bays
filled with 2TB's and am thinking of getting a couple of 3 TB's to increase
the space a bit. I'm running at around 70% capacity.

Oh yeah and one more thing. I have 2 Mac's at home (a Macbook and a Mac
Mini). Both are being imaged (Time-Machine) to the Synology also. Just
friggin fantastic!!!
