Gary,
I understand and salute your choice of Synology. Did you ever
investigate the
Netgear/ReadyNAS series? I've been using the ReadyNAS since 2008 on a
suggestion of another HWG List Member; and, I have had zero trouble.

I own a Duo-V1 (discontinued), an Ultra 2, and, an Ultra 2+. My needs
are very
simple however; yet, my data is completely safe (to my belief anyway).
BTW, the new WDC 'REDS' are now appear to be fully qualified in the
ReadyNAS series.

I am about to take the plunge and replace my current NAS with a DS1512+
from Synology. I am aware of the issues they had with restarts but they
supposedly have found the issue (bad flash RAM) and fixed the issue. I
plan on populating it using the new WD Red (3TB) drives.
I have seen mention that the price on the drives is ~180-190 but the prices
I have seen are a lot more than that, times 5 it gets to be a fair chunk of
change. I have seem them at NewEgg of $260 and Amazon for $230 (when they
had them). NewEgg also had a limit of two.
So, does anyone know of any place I can get 5 of these for a decent
price? I want reliability and I think these are the best drives available
for that, would love to hear any thoughts on my selections too. It is a
lot of money for a NAS and I want to make sure that I am making the right
choice.
Thanks!
