Safranim/Safraniot:

Encyclopedia Judaica WILL NOT RUN in Windows XP.

Sadly, I know a great deal more about this problem than I will recount here.
Suffice it to say that I spent weeks on this issue with the vendor from whom
I bought the software (very helpful but unable to solve the problem) and
with EJ in New York and Jerusalem.

There is only one solution, but it is one I consider to be unacceptable. One
can "build" a "virtual machine" on top of Windows XP and have that "virtual
machine" emulate the Windows NT environment. HOWEVER, that means that all of
the Windows XP software will NOT run concurrently. If, for example, I wanted
to run EJ on the "virtual machine," I would be unable to run OUTLOOK, Excel,
WORD, PowerPoint and so on at the same time. I could run ONLY EJ as a single
program.

I should say that there is one other solution. I do have an ancient but not
entirely decrepit NT machine, and I could set it up next to my XP machine
and pass files back and forth. That, however, is consummately clumsy and
unlikely to solve the problem for many other people. I have, in fact, not
even exercised this option.

As a retired Computer Science prof., I believe that EJ has demonstrated
maximum feasible incompetence. I have never previously encountered a problem
in which a piece of software which runs in a previous release of an
operating system fails to run in the current one. I have many pieces of
"legacy" code which I run from time to time. In fact, WIN XP SP2 even allows
me to run a DOS window (remember DOS?) on those rare occasions when I want
to do something at a very low level.

I never did succeed in solving this problem. The vendor went so far as to
offer me a credit to be used toward purchasing other software. I have not
yet taken that option.

DON

P.S. If you want the instructions on running that "virtual machine," please
write to me off-line. If very many people want the instructions, I will post
them.
