For background an excellent book (available "used" only)

I would like to suggest to you the following book "Whose Land?" by 
James Parkes The late James Parkes was a British Theologian whose 
post war travels brought him to the British Mandate of Palestine. In 
1949 he authored the book WHOSE LAND? A History of the Peoples of 
Palestine (revised in 1970) published by Penguin Books. It gives a 
very interesting, detailed history of the geographical area know as 
the Land of Israel/the Holy Land/Judea and Samaria/Southern 
Syria/Israel/Palestine.
