New Book The Rise of Jewish Life and Religion in British Columbia, 1858-1948 To celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Province of British Columbia, the Jewish Historical Society of British Columbia (JHSBC) is proud to announce the release of the historical non-fiction book The Rise of Jewish Life and Religion in British Columbia, 1858-1948 by JHSBC Historian Emeritus Cyril E. Leonoff. Published as an issue of the JHSBC's annual journal The Scribe, this book surveys the origins and development of the Jewish communities throughout BC and the Yukon Territory, and the congregations, educational and social institutions that followed. About the Author Cyril E. Leonoff was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1925. A civil engineer by profession, Leonoff is also a graduate of the Public History Program at Simon Fraser University. In 1970, Leonoff founded the Jewish Historical Society of British Columbia (JHSBC). He is a past-president of the Vancouver Historical Society, has chaired the Vancouver Heritage Advisory Committee, and is currently the Historian Emeritus of the JHSBC. Leonoff has authored and edited numerous books and papers on engineering and historical topics and has won several awards including the McWilliams Medal of the Manitoba Historical Society, the B.C. Book Prize, and the City of Vancouver Heritage Award. In 2007 he received the Distinguished Service Award of the Association for Canadian Jewish Studies for a lifetime of scholarly achievement in the research and writing of the Jewish history of British Columbia and the prairies.
