THE TYRANNY OF TIME By Azariah Ibn Ephraim Ben Joab Of Modena
Edited By Dvora Bregman The year: 1481. The place: the town of Vasto in the district of Naples under the rule of King Ferdinand of Spain. R. Azariah ben Ephraim ben Joab of Modena is compelled to abandon the town in which he had resided in security for two decades. On the eve of his departure, impoverished and facing an uncertain future, he expresses his anguish and complaints against the Lord and Fate. Hamas ha-Zeman (The Tyranny of Time), is a journey preceding a journey. The author's soul traverses from feelings of injustice and discrimination to utter submission to the Creator; from intellectual enquiry, indecision and desperation to appeasement, serenity and hope within innocent, undemanding faith. The book includes introductions in Hebrew and English, a facsimile of an authorized manuscript, a computerized text, text variations, a commentary and a bibliography. Dvora Bregman is Professor Emeritus of Hebrew literature at Ben Gurion University of the Negev.
