I'm pretty appalled by this. As much as I loved reading The Book Thief,
for example, this is not a book to introduce the Holocaust to students.
It's a very complicated concept to feel sympathy for the Germans while
knowing what was going on. I think the analogy to Gone with the Wind is
apt. I don't understand why Diary of a Young Girl would no longer be
interesting, especially with the understanding that it recounts the real
experiences of a girl living through the experience. I think that if
students only read one book, it's better to read a real story rather
than fiction. Finally, people all over the world read Anne Frank; why
shouldn't our students. For example, when I have had Japanese exchange
students living with us, they had all read Diary of a Young Girl. I
think American students would be missing a piece of a literary canon if
they don't read it.
