One title that would be an excellent introduction for middle school students to the Holocaust is "Yellow Star" by Jennifer Roy. It is based on the grandmother of the author and her experiences as a young girl hiding in the Lodz Ghetto. The book is not graphic and written in free verse that gives a feeling of the intensity of the time. Another title that has a non-Jewish protagonist but sends the messages of standing up for one's beliefs and decency in humanity is "Vive la Paris" by Esme Raji Codell. Paris, the protagonist, has a piano teacher that is a Holocaust survivor. She changes her views of the world, once she learns about the Holocaust and the cruelness humankind can inflict on one another. ----------------- Heather Lenson Librarian at Ratner Media Center Jewish Education Center of Cleveland 2030 South Taylor Road Cleveland Heights, Ohio 44118 PH: (216) 371-0446 ext. 228 FX: (216) 371-2523 E-mail: <mailto:[email protected]>[email protected] --- Messages and opinions expressed on Hasafran are those of the individual author and are not necessarily endorsed by the Association of Jewish Libraries (AJL) =========================================================== Submissions for Ha-Safran, send to: [email protected] SUBscribing, SIGNOFF commands send to: Listproc @ lists.acs.ohio-state.edu Questions, problems, complaints, compliments;-) send to: galron.1 @ osu.edu Ha-Safran Archives: Current: http://www.mail-archive.com/hasafran%40lists.acs.ohio-state.edu/maillist.html History: http://www.mail-archive.com/hasafran%40lists.acs.ohio-state.edu/history.html AJL HomePage http://www.JewishLibraries.org
