How can something written at the time the events occurred be old-fashioned? Do they want the forties to come off like this century? Old-fashioned? What can be more real and authentic? I like the Book Thief and perhaps it's gentler because it deals mainly with survival, but is gentle what we want here? Agree that despite its young teen heroine and its appearance on young adult book lists, it's not a young adult book.
