Have you looked at the books by Aranka Siegal? Upon the Head of a Goat was a
Newberry Honor Book, and her other two books are also excellent. I would
suggest them for 9th grade and up.

She does not deal directly with Nazi atrocities, but I think the books are
important because they detail what life was like before World War II.

Eva Moses Kor wrote a book dealing with her experiences: Surviving the Angel of
Death: The Story of a Mengele Twin in Auschwitz. This book has a lot more
graphic descriptions. In conjunction with the book, there is a movie, Forgiving
Mengele, about Eva Kor and how she goes back to Auschwitz and reads her
statement. Great subject for discussion.

Continuing with the book and movie theme, Salvaged Pages: Young Writers'
Diaries of the Holocaust edited by Alexandra Zapruder is a good choice. The
value of this book is that you can pick the selections you think are
appropriate for your group. HBO made a movie based on this book: I'm Still
Here: Real Diaries of Young People Who Lived During the Holocaust. The diary
selections are read by celebrities like Ryan Gosling and Elijah Wood. Also
great for discussion and expanding into geographic and historical context.

  Subject: [ha-Safran] holocaust book suggestion

I am looking for a needle in a haystack and thought you might help:

I'm searching for a holocaust novel or memoir appropriate for an English
class in a Bais Yaakov high school. It must be age appropriate regarding
reading level (9th to 11th grades), appropriate for a religious girls' school,
and well written for an English classroom.

I've done research and so far have only come up with books that are for a
younger, more middle school, audience.

  Thanks!
  Leah Friedman
