We use a similar Shabbat technique with the only difference that our shoebox has cards with each family's name. The members paperclip their member card to the cards of the books they want to take out and leave the clipped sets on the desk. We have a box of envelopes with each family's name on one, kept in alphabetical order. Each book has a card with bar code number on it. Congregants place cards in envelope and leave on the desk. On Sunday a volunteer enters name in computer and number and voila! The book is checked out.
