I had to deal with this problem a year ago. My solution only works well with a small library and congregation (as we have) because I no longer print out book cards (though older books still have them). I also have a box with congregants names on cards listed alphabetically. The instructions tell patrons who check out items to take out their name card and place it in a small bin. If the book has a card, patrons must paperclip the book card to the name card. The next morning, if there is only a name card, I contact the patron, asking what was checked out. Alternatively, the patron will contact me with the information, but more likely I do the contacting. So far, with just a few (sometimes no) books checked out each Shabbat, the system is managable and the my fear of books "walking away" has gone unrealized. I'm afraid I don't have the time or budget to make book cards for every book, but luckily this method seems to work for us.
