Back in the Stone Age when I got my MLS degree, we talked about "selection,"
and not "censorship."
We would *never* engage in censorship! However, there are books one simply
doesn't "select" for the collection. You may have to justify the items you do
select, but not the ones you don't.
Do they not speak in these terms today?

I had a similar experience with the book "The Rabbi's Daughter" by Reva Mann. I
had only read some reviews, which were positive and didn't convey the exact
nature of the book. A 9th grader took it out and returned it quickly, saying
that she didn't like it. I then got an uncomfortable feeling and read it
myself, soon deciding that it didn't belong on our shelves because of overly
explicit and graphic sexual descriptions (yes, I think sex in books is fine but
often subtlety is best). I don't censor books but this one was over the top. So
I "de-accessioned it" myself!
You know your school population best and can make the judgement call.

There are several reviews on Amazon (one very astute one in particular) that
lays out what the book is about and discusses the meaning of its
contents. It seems to be a raw account of what happened to the author 15
years ago. For a certain part of the population it sounds like it would be

population. The reviewer seems to feel that the girl never got any proper

have caused upset. I worked in an elementary school where there was more
parental screening than there possibly would be in an upper school. But then I
am a coward and try to avoid conflict if possible. All of this said I
have not read the book.
