One of the members of the International Relations Committee told the committee
that the UN was coming with a report on the Gaza engagement of July 2014
sometimes around March and asked the committee to wait until that time to
confirm the accusations that the resolution was making and that our group was
refuting. It seemed to me that the members of the committee, but one, welcomed
this suggestion.

As our colleague Avi Weinryb wrote yesterday evening “Then, Dr. Mustafa
Abelwahid spoke up in favor of the resolution, discounting the fact that there
was no evidence that the 244 schools the UN says were damaged were targeted
intentionally. He didn't win anyone over, and he couldn't get anyone to second
a motion to endorse the resolution. At that point, they opted for an easy way
out and chose no action.”

This morning an important new development was announced in the news that
Schabas quits UN Gaza inquiry. Schabas has been a controversial choice because
of his previous positions. Hopefully this may help us.

Thanks for your interest.

Hi
Can you elaborate on the "comments" you allude to? Obviously we all welcome the
news but I am curious about what was said to make them withdraw the resolution.
Thanks

As of now the outcome is positive.

The SRRT leadership withdrew the resolution on divestment at the council
meeting II this morning and then Mr. Kagan wasn’t able to convince the members
of the International Relations Committee to endorse his resolution on the
destruction of schools and libraries in Gaza in 2014 at their meeting this
afternoon.

He could bring this resolution at the Council meeting III tomorrow morning but
it seems very unlikely that he will after the comments made at that meeting.

Let’s see what he does in San Francisco at the annual meeting.

In the meantime, thanks to all who were concerned and gave of their time and
effort. Much, much appreciated.

I have already emailed Clare to apologize for hurting her feelings.
Her post used the term "occupation" in a way that assumed a universally
acknowledged fact, although many of us feel strongly that the word
"occupation," without taking any context into account, is often an anti-Israel
propaganda tool bandied about by the media. That is why I was surprised that
the moderator posted that comment. This is not the first time a hot button
issue like this has come up, and I remember reading a post saying that everyone
should stay away from politics, so nobody feels offended.
In discussing the ALA resolution to divest, we were working together against a
pointless and often anti-Semitic action. That is in the spirit of AJL and
HaSafran, and I hope there is a positive outcome. Once again, I am sorry that
my comment hurt or offended anyone.
