I am working with the New Mexico History Museum in developing the first major
museum exhibition on the converso experience from Spain to Mexico and New
Mexico. We have chosen to not use the term “marrano” because of the way it was
historically used like other negative stereotype words used against
African-Americans, Jews, and Italians among others in this country. We are
using the term “converso” as the umbrella term to refer to any Jew to convert
under whatever circumstances. We are using “anusim” to refer to those who were
overtly forced to convert. We are using “crypto-Jews” only to refer to Jews who
chose to continue practicing Judaism; we are not using “crypto-Jews” but rather
“conversos” to refer to people who had the memory of the family having been
Jewish in the past or to refer to people who did Jewish cultural practices
without knowing that the practices were Jewish.
