Thank you Rita and Joyce for your messages. I was not educated as a librarian yet my life journey also lead me there. If it were not for AJL, my local chapter (AJLSC) and Susie Dubin I could not have done it. I learned on the job. I worked with pre-school, day school, religious school and adult learners in a 15,000 volume library...solo. I defy anyone with a degree to do any better work than I did for 20 years.
The institution in which I worked no longer has such a deep commitment to their library. I weeded out 70% of the adult collection at their request before I retired. They kept the children's library and the librarian because they still have the schools. She has a teaching degree not a library degree but is highly skilled and professional in what she accomplishes. Yes we in AJL should be thankful to those institutions that still care by supporting and assisting any steward of a Jewish library to offer the best service they can to their patrons.
