Thank you Joyce for reminding people, that educated as a librarian or not - we
are all here to serve our communities and that Hasafran and the AJL is supposed
to be a safe place to ask for help and guidance.
Becoming a librarian was not in my plans, but my life journey landed me here
and I am proud to be the librarian at our Temple. I learned on the job and I
asked for help. I understand that the jobs for librarians is changing and
threated; but in my humble opinion that does not give people the right to
respond to non - educated librarians in such a negative manner. It is
unprofessional and hurtful. Those of us not educated as librarians look to the
professionals for guidance and support.

In the true spirit of Chesed Thank you to Joyce & Rachel that offered
supportive and useful suggestions to Charna & Myrna.
We should also be thankful for every organization that still values having a
library as part of it - small or big - run by volunteers or professional
librarians - the survival of library's depend on it.
Next time an uneducated librarian asks a question maybe you can welcome them
into the world of librarianship.

Thank you to all of the people that assisted me on Ha safran when I started 4
years ago when I asked questions.

Dear Colleagues,
Although in the best possible world a professional librarian should be hired
for every synagogue that wishes to have a library, this is not always feasible
for a variety of reasons that may not be known to us.
A library consultant would also be a helpful way to go, especially in setting
up the library.
However, when someone turns to AJL for help I feel they should be encouraged.
Our mission is to promote Jewish literacy. By fostering ties with lay community
members, we also do our job.
Joyce

You need to hire an expert librarian. Collection development is one of
expertises of a librarian. Having is list of books is a great starting point,
but the process of purchasing the best books for your collection and making
sure they are cataloged and available is a job for an expert. Anyone can go
into a book store and purchase books, but it takes a librarian to buy the
correct books and build a collection.

Dear Mr. Galron: I am on the library committee for my synagogue (conservative)
and am charged with creating a children and youth collection. Your site was
recommended to me and I hope that you can offer me some guidance.

Are there any Jewish children or teen classics we should have? Are there any
particular authors we should look at? What are modern families interested in?

Thank you for any time and effort you can offer to get me started, Charna
