The reason to keep them is to match donations and returned books against them
to make sure you're not receiving a title that you already weeded. It's also
good if someone requests an old title and you want to explain why you don't
have it. This becomes less of an issue as time goes on. You could have a high
schooler enter them into a spreadsheet.

Almost embarrassed to ask…. Is there a reason to keep the check-out cards –
that is, the only version of a list -- of the books that have been culled from
our synagogue library collection? They are in NO order, and they are crammed
into two overflowing shoeboxes. I’m about to need a third box and frankly,
would like to toss them, but the former archivist in me is concerned.
Is this a dilemma, or should I simply recycle?
