When I last looked into that whole deal the story was like so: Xscreensaver existed and had workable if clunky configuration. Gnome decided to reimplement all things screensaver and snag just the screen hacks, and made a lot of errors that jwz had already dealt with in the years of dealing with x. Some years passed where the Gnome screensavers were buggy and awful, but had "integegration". Eventually the parties were reconciled, and the necessary integration logic was added to xscreensaver so that there was no need for recreating already solved bugs. Things were limited to a level of awful as existed prior to Gnome. Then the next generation of idiots reimplementd the gnome screensaver stuff a second time, tossed out the integration, and broke all the functionality. That's where things remain.
