Ajay Kumar commented on HDFS-13059:
-----------------------------------

[~elgoiri],[~aw] thanks for your comments.

>When talking about storage there are always two extra data points: time and
>growth. Administrators are going to use this pie chart in >presentations. Then
>use it again in 6 months. It ends being a horrible comparison because unless
>the usage of the cluster hasn't >changed dramatically, it doesn't really
>convey much information.
Our UI's are stateless and are not suitable for comparing any data point over
period of time. People usually rely on jmx data to do comparison over
historical data.
 > Given that the tool tip is required really underscores this point.
I have seen people working on hadoop from years but still getting confused b/w
what DFS used and Non DFS used means in our summary table. Tooltip tries to
address that.

>Additionally, if I have more than one cluster, I'm going to pull up both NN
>UIs and look at both charts simultaneously. Again, this doesn't >really convey
>much information other than maybe the usage patterns are similar. It doesn't
>convey an actual size.
Yes, but this is current behavior(how our current UI is) and this change is
not intended to address that. May be we can address it separately.
 >As an alternative, I think I'd much rather have a bar chart where some actual
 >numeric information can also be provided without >requiring tool tips. The
 >units will also give a much better sense of quantity. Comparing static bar
 >charts over time is also significantly >easier.
Personally i think we are showing composition of DFS allocation, so pie chart
is well suited in this case. Concrete numbers are already there in Summary and
bar chart will show them numerically relative to each other. Also we don't have
the dimension of time in jmx data. So, benefit of bar graph to show data
changing over time is not applicable in this case.

> This jira proposes to add a pie chart in NN UI to show storage used by:
> * DFS Used (Tooltip : "Storage currently used for DFS.")
> * DFS available (Tooltip : "Storage available for DFS use.")
> * Non DFS Used (Tooltip : "Storage allocated for DFS but currently" +
> " used by Non DFS storage.")
> Tooltip will help users better understand what these terms mean.
