Jing Zhao commented on HDFS-2802:
---------------------------------

Suresh, I keep running tests for snapshots these days. In general the tests run
well with more than 1.2 million files/directories in my testing cluster. But we
did find some issues which are mainly caused by taking snapshots directly on
root. I filed HDFS-4842, HDFS-4857, and HDF-4863 for fix. Also HDFS-4846,
HDFS-4848, and HDFS-4850 are filed by [~schu] for further improvement. I think
the branch-2 merge will be ready after these jiras are committed.

> Snapshots are point in time images of parts of the filesystem or the entire
> filesystem. Snapshots can be a read-only or a read-write point in time copy
> of the filesystem. There are several use cases for snapshots in HDFS. I will
> post a detailed write-up soon with with more information.
