This sounds like a reasonable thing to expect of a configuration
management tool.  But I'm very skeptical that it's realistic, or
desirable.  There are so many relationships and interdependencies and
complexities involved in CM; it just isn't like database management.  The
way to undo a set of actions has to involve thinking about what needs to
be done, and to enter new configurations.  I don't think there is, or will
be, pushbutton rollback capability in any tool (please let me know if I'm
wrong).  Of course version control for your configurations is important
too, but it's only part of the picture.

This looks like an interesting discussion. I tend to agree with Ed about rollback being difficult. Actually, Alva Couch and I have been talking about ways of accomplishing rollback for a while. As of today,
people generally fudge it.
